The Woman in the Yard Review: The mysterious story of ‘The Woman in the Yard’ faded due to lack of fear

The Woman in the Yard Review: Nowadays, horror films have become a product that only resorts to deception to scare the audience – sudden ghosts, one monster hiding inside another. But ‘The Woman in the Yard’ proves to be even weaker than this. This is a horror film that has no new tricks to scare. The film begins with Ramona (Danielle Deadwyler), who is lying in bed watching a video of her husband David (Russell Hornsby). In the video, David is talking about the dream in which their farmhouse is completely built. But the reality is the opposite – David is no longer in this world and Ramona is living a desperate life with her broken leg. Seeing the broken car lying in their garden, it is assumed that David may have died in an accident.

Boredom has replaced fear

Ramona’s life is in shambles. She tries to spend time with her children – teenager Tay (Payton Jackson) and little girl Annie (Estella Kahihi), but their condition is such that she is not even able to call the power company when the power goes out in the house. The story of the first half hour of the film is so dull that it does not seem like a horror film. It seems more depressing, due to which the viewers do not feel like getting scared.

‘The Woman in the Yard’ finally arrives

The real mystery character of the film finally appears – a strange woman, wrapped head to toe in black, sitting quietly on a metal chair in the garden. Her face is not visible, only her hands are visible, which are placed in a pose similar to Mona Lisa. Children call her ‘woman’ when they see her, although in that situation it is difficult to understand whether she is a woman or someone else. Ramona goes to talk to the woman, who answers in a very cold and mysterious tone. This character is not a bloody murderer, but a mysterious spirit who has come to free Ramona from her past.

The film fails to scare

The film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra , who made cult films like ‘Orphan’ . But here he completely fails to make the audience’s heart beat faster. In one scene of the film, some things start falling around in the room to show ghostly movement, which makes it seem as if the producer suddenly said – “Add a little ‘Poltergeist’ flavour to it!” The biggest weakness of the film is its dull and bland screenplay, which has no trace of fear. Even a talented actress like Danielle Deadwyler remains confined to her disappointment. ‘The Woman in the Yard’ remains just a flat, boring experience in the name of a horror film, which neither scares nor thrills.
