Now ‘ The Lancet’ has given a serious warning for the future . According to the report, if the current situation remains the same, then by 2050, 450 million (45 crore) people above the age of 25 years in India may become obese or overweight.
This problem is not limited to India only, but China and America are also on top of this list. The report states that by 2050, 627 million people in China and 214 million people in America will be obese.

According to research, if people’s eating and lifestyle habits remain the same, then by 2050, around 3.8 billion (380 crores) people over the age of 25 across the world may become obese or overweight.
- Out of this figure, 1.95 billion (195 crore) people will be obese.
- Obesity rates in the Sub-Saharan Africa Super Area are projected to increase by a whopping 254.8% .
These figures are a serious concern for global health .
Women or men – who is more prone to obesity?
If we look at the data till 2021, a total of 2.11 billion (211 crore) people around the world were obese or overweight.
- These included 1 billion (100 crore) men and 1.11 billion (111 crore) women .
- In China, 402 million (40.2 crores) people were found to be obese.
- In India, 180 million (18 crore) people were suffering from obesity.
- There were 172 million overweight people in the US .
It is clear from these figures that the rate of obesity among women is higher than that among men .
Obesity is increasing rapidly in India, China and America
The report also states that China, India and America have the highest number of obese and overweight people .
But there are many other countries where the problem of obesity is increasing rapidly.
- In countries like India, China, America, Brazil, Russia, Mexico, Indonesia and Egypt, half the population is moving towards obesity.
- The biggest reason for this is considered to be fast food and an unhealthy diet .
Fast food is a big factor behind obesity
Nowadays the trend of fast food and ultra-processed food is increasing very rapidly, which is becoming the biggest cause of obesity.

- Apart from India, countries like Cameroon and Vietnam also saw the highest annual growth in per capita sales of ultra-processed food and drinks between 2009 and 2019 .
- Things like cold drinks, packaged snacks, burgers, pizza, French fries, sweet juices and energy drinks are becoming a part of people’s everyday diet.

- Diabetes – Blood sugar level increases in the body .
- High Blood Pressure – Foods with high sodium increase blood pressure .

- Liver Problem (Fatty Liver) – Consuming more oily and processed food increases the problem of fatty liver .
- Cancer – Chemicals and preservatives present in fast food can cause cancer.

How to avoid obesity?
To avoid obesity, it is necessary to make some changes in lifestyle .
1. Adopt a healthy diet
- Eat a homemade balanced diet .
- Give priority to fiber rich foods (Fruits, Vegetables, Whole Grains) .
- Avoid junk food and sweet drinks .
- Drink adequate amounts of water .
2. Exercise daily
- Do at least 30-45 minutes of physical activity .
- Obesity can be controlled through yoga, walking, cycling, jogging and swimming .
3. Take care of mental health
- Obesity can also increase due to stress and depression .
- Do meditation and pranayam daily .
- Get enough sleep (at least 7-8 hours) .
4. Avoid wrong eating habits
- Do not eat late at night .
- Avoid eating too much oily, spicy and processed foods .
5. Get regular health checkups
- Keep getting your blood sugar, cholesterol and BP checked from time to time .
- Consult a doctor to keep obesity under control .
